Reversible Shuttle Conveyor (Distribution System)
The Efficient Solution for Multi-Bin Feeding and Batching.
The Reversible Shuttle Conveyor (often referred to locally as a “Matching Conveyor” or Distribution Conveyor) is the standard engineering solution for feeding a linear row of silos, bunkers, or hoppers.
Unlike a fixed conveyor that dumps material at a single spot, the Shuttle Conveyor is a Mobile + Reversible unit. It travels back and forth on rails and runs the belt in both directions (Clockwise/Counter-Clockwise). This dual-axis mobility allows a single machine to service 2, 4, or even 10 different discharge points with zero spillages.
Why Use a Reversible Shuttle? (The Logic)
If you have a row of 5 storage bins, you have two choices:
-
The Expensive Way: Install 5 separate fixed conveyors or a complex cascade system.
-
The Smart Way: Install 1 Reversible Shuttle Conveyor.
Core Functionality
Bi-Directional Belt: The belt can reverse direction instantly, allowing discharge at either the Head or Tail end.
Rail Mobility: The entire carriage moves longitudinally on rails, positioning the discharge point exactly over the center of any bin.
Automated Batching: When paired with level sensors and a PLC, it can automatically seek the next empty bin and fill it—no human operator required.
Engineering Challenges & Our Solutions
Designing a reversible conveyor is harder than it looks. The main issue is Belt Tracking. A belt trained to run straight in one direction will often drift (“run off”) when reversed.
At [Brand Name], we solve this with specific DTII-derived engineering:
1. Reversible Idler Alignment
Standard idlers tilt slightly forward to train the belt. This doesn’t work for reversible systems. We use Neutral-Tilt Idlers combined with Self-Aligning Training Sets that pivot automatically based on the belt’s direction of travel.
2. Dual-Direction Scrapers
Standard scrapers (cleaners) flip over if the belt reverses. We install specialized Bi-Directional Scrapers (PU or Alloy) that maintain cleaning pressure regardless of belt direction, preventing carryback mess on the floor.
3. Robust Drive Logic
We use heavy-duty gearmotors with Integrated Brakes. This ensures that when the shuttle moves to a new bin, it locks firmly in place (Rail Clamps) before the belt starts running.

Note: Capacity is calculated based on coal density (0.8-1.0 t/m³). For iron ore or heavier materials, drive power must be recalculated.
Primary Applications
Concrete Batching Plants: Distributing aggregates (sand/gravel) into mixing bins.
Grain Terminals: Filling sequential silos with wheat or corn.
Power Plants: Distributing coal evenly across the bunker slots to prevent segregation.
Ore Processing: Feeding different grades of ore into separate crushing circuits.
FAQ: Reversible Conveyors
Q: Can I use this for long distances?
No. Shuttle conveyors are typically short (under 50m). Their purpose is distribution within a building or structure, not long-distance transport. For long distances, use a Fixed Conveyor with a Tripper Car.
Q: How do you prevent the belt from running off when reversing?
We use V-Return Idlers and Dual-Action Trainers. Furthermore, the frame alignment on a shuttle conveyor requires higher precision (diagonal tolerance < 1mm) than a standard conveyor to ensure tracking.
Q: What is “Matching” Conveyor?
“Matching” is an industry slang for “Batching” or “Distribution.” It refers to the machine’s ability to match the material flow to the correct bin. It is the same machine as a Reversible Shuttle Conveyor.
